  • prior methods don't apply because leafs often
    are a huge number of isolated surfaces
  • at a certain distance leaves are not perceived as individual objects,
    but as a "mass" with certain transparency and reflection properties
  • the foliage can be represented by fewer leaves
  • to keep the apparent transparency constant remaining leaves are
    scaled while other leaves are gradually removed
  • similar to methods used for complexity management in
    hair/fur rendering
